Description
This strip is in good condition. Land east, take off west. Trees on west end require a slightly steeper approach than normal. There is one tie down area in the area on the east end of the strip on the north side. There is a pit toilet in that same area. It had toilet paper, but was full of spiders until we cleared it out a little. No picnic tables, fire rings, etc. Great strip with a lot of potential.
Update 6/1/2010 The strip is still in OK condition. There is some erosion from old rodent activity, so it a bit bumpy. We walked the runway and didn't find any big holes. The tie downs have been removed and some of the tires marking the end of the runway are gone. It looks like the forest service is improving the area for forest fighting activities. The pit toilet is still there. BYOTP.
Easy hike to Belknap Hot Springs Resort. It is a few miles up river. Walking the highway is unpleasant and unnecessary. Pick up the hiking trail to the Resort by crossing the highway, take the first secondary road to the North, and watch for a trail crossing. Turn right onto the trail heading up river (left takes you to a campground downriver). Takes about 1-1.5 hours. Nice views of the McKenzie River. Resort staff mentioned a pickup at the airstrip could be prearranged.
