Description
Pittsburg airstrip is located on the banks of the Snake River (Oregon side) in Idaho's Hells Canyon. It is across the river from Pitssburg Landing boat launch which is accessible by road and has 28 campsites, toilets, potable water, tables, fire pits, etc. - but crossing the river isn't an option without a boat, or a big swim. If you walk through the USFS compound and walk 3-4 minutes down an access road, you can walk down onto a boat dock and flag down a passing boat, but getting back is another issue! There are windsocks on the upstream and inland end of the strip and at the inland midpoint of the intersection.
Watch out for animals on the strip and rattlesnakes most everywhere else!
Contact the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest for more information: 509-758-0616.
Camping:
Primitive camping is permitted and potable water is available except in Winter. There are no toilet facilities unless USFS is in residence.
I (PaulZ) am a USFS volunteer and have maintained the Pittsburg Admin strip for many years and I can usually be found living there at the USFS compound during August and much of September. If you see a red winged Maule with fat tires, stop by. Call me at my office 503 723-0200 with any questions, especially flying questions, regarding this USFS site and its airstrip.
